DISTRICT SOLOS AND ENSEMBLES – November 2023

SOLO & ENSEMBLES 2023

November 3-4, 2023

What is Solo & Ensemble?

Solo and Ensemble Music Performance Assessment (S&E) is an assessment tool sponsored yearly by the Florida Vocal Association (FVA) for the purpose of promoting musical excellence in our choral programs.  Middle school students prepare 1 vocal solo with piano accompaniment and/or small group performances, which they perform in front of an FVA adjudicator (judge). This judge will assign them a rating based on standards that encompass every aspect of musical performance. Sample adjudicator sheets are available here.

Who is eligible to participate?

Only students taking private voice lessons or Mr. Mullen’s classes are eligible to participate.

How are solos and ensembles assessed?

In these assessments, state standards of tone quality, performance fundamentals, musical effect, and other factors associated with the highest level of choral music performance are considered by each adjudicator. Each vocalist will present up to two solo works, approved and trained by the director, and be able to sing with live accompaniment.   Each ensemble (special category) will be assessed on their vocal and choreographed performance in much the same way a chorus is adjudicated at Choral MPA.  One special note:  every soloist and special category ensemble member MUST perform in Choral MPA on March 2, 2019, to receive a qualifying score.

Ratings

Soloists and special category/ensembles are given a rating that best represents their level of achievement. Ratings range from Superior, Excellent, Good, Fair, and Poor.  A class plaque is given for superior and excellence in choral performance.

Music educators and students go through these assessments in order to become more effective educators and musicians.
